Dubai Police swiftly came to the aid of a motorist whose car’s cruise control malfunctioned, leaving them unable to control the vehicle. The motorist immediately called Dubai’s emergency helpline for urgent assistance.
Within minutes, a traffic patrol team arrived at Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road to secure the area surrounding the vehicle.
Maj-Gen Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, acting assistant commandant for operations affairs, explained, “The traffic patrols were immediately dispatched to Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and spotted the vehicle beyond the Expo Bridge.”
He detailed the operation, saying, “Given the high risk posed by the malfunctioning vehicle on such a fast-paced road, the patrols swiftly secured the area and activated warning signals for other motorists. They also reassured the anxious driver. One patrol positioned itself in front of the vehicle and gradually brought it to a stop, while the others secured the lanes behind.”
Al Mazrouei urged Dubai motorists to stay calm and avoid panicking if their car’s cruise control malfunctions. He emphasized the importance of wearing a seatbelt, turning on hazard lights and headlights, and promptly contacting Dubai’s emergency number (999) to report the situation.
He also provided key steps to manage a malfunctioning cruise control, advising drivers to first shift the gear to neutral (N) and restart the engine. If this doesn’t work, they should apply consistent, firm pressure on the brakes until the vehicle halts.
Should that fail, he advised gradually releasing the handbrake while firmly gripping the steering wheel. If none of these methods work, alternating between neutral (N) and drive (D) may help regain control before traffic patrol assistance arrives.
In the event that the vehicle comes under control before help arrives, the driver should safely maneuver it off Dubai’s busy roads to ensure everyone’s safety.
