Dubai Police Deploy AI-Enabled Radars to Curb Tailgating and Traffic Violations

Dubai Police has introduced advanced radar systems to monitor tailgating violations and issue fines, reinforcing road safety across the emirate.


Authorities had previously launched awareness campaigns urging motorists to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. However, due to a rise in tailgating incidents, law enforcement is now implementing high-tech solutions to deter offenders.


Strict Penalties for Tailgating in Dubai

Under Dubai’s traffic laws, tailgating is punishable by a Dh400 fine and four black points. Last year, the police announced stricter enforcement, including impounding vehicles for up to 30 days for repeated traffic offences such as tailgating.


The announcement was made at a press conference hosted by the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police on March 5. Officials revealed that a trial phase using AI-integrated radars had been conducted to ensure the accuracy of monitoring systems.


Brigadier Engineer Mohammed Ali Karam, Director of the Traffic Technology Department, stated:
“The trial period was to ensure the accuracy of the radars in identifying violations with precision.”


Comprehensive Traffic Monitoring Across Dubai

The newly installed AI-powered radars will not only detect tailgating but also monitor multiple traffic violations, including:


1. Excessive Vehicle Noise

  • The system can detect excessive noise levels, their source, and intensity.
  • Violation incurs a Dh2,000 fine and 12 black points.
  • Aimed at reducing disturbances in residential areas and maintaining a quieter environment.


2. Speeding Fines in Dubai

  • Exceeding speed limit by more than 80 km/hDh3,000 fine, 60-day vehicle impoundment, and 23 black points.
  • Exceeding by 60 km/hDh2,000 fine, 20-day impoundment, 12 black points.
  • Exceeding by 50 km/hDh1,000 fine.
  • Exceeding by 40 km/hDh700 fine.
  • Exceeding by 30 km/hDh600 fine.
  • Exceeding by 20 km/hDh300 fine.


3. Traffic Signal Violations

  • Jumping a red lightDh1,000 fine, 30-day vehicle impoundment, 12 black points.


4. Lane Violations

  • Failure to adhere to a mandatory laneDh400 fine.
  • Ignoring lane restrictionsDh1,500 fine, 12 black points.


5. Driving Against Traffic

  • Violation incurs a Dh600 fine, 7-day vehicle impoundment, and 4 black points.


6. Hard Shoulder Violations

  • Driving on the hard shoulderDh1,000 fine, 30-day vehicle impoundment, 6 black points.


7. Seatbelt and Distraction Fines

  • Not wearing a seatbeltDh400 fine, 4 black points.
  • Using a phone while drivingDh800 fine, 4 black points.
  • Excessive window tintingDh1,500 fine.


8. Pedestrian Safety Violations

  • Failing to give way at pedestrian crossingsDh500 fine, 6 black points.


9. Illegal Turns

  • Turning from an undesignated areaDh500 fine, 4 black points.


10. Expired Vehicle Registration

  • Driving with expired registrationDh500 fine, 4 black points.

 

11. Stopping Violations

  • Stopping in the middle of the road without justificationDh1,000 fine, 6 black points.

  • Blocking other vehicles while stoppingDh500 fine.


Dubai Police Emphasizes Safe Driving Culture

During the conference, Dubai Police urged motorists to abide by road regulations to prevent accidents and ensure safety for all road users. The AI-driven radar systems are part of Dubai’s vision for smart traffic management, reinforcing its status as a global leader in urban mobility and road safety innovation.

With strict penalties and cutting-edge enforcement technology, Dubai is taking proactive measures to enhance traffic discipline and reduce road-related incidents across the city.
