India successfully launches Earth Observation Satellite-8

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the Earth Observation Satellite-8 (EOS-8) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, India, on Friday, as reported by Asian News International (ANI).

In a post on X, ISRO announced, “The third developmental flight of the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) was a success. The SSLV-D3 accurately placed EOS-08 into its intended orbit. This achievement completes the SSLV Development Project by ISRO/DOS (Department of Space). With technology transfer, the Indian industry and NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), ISRO’s commercial arm, will now produce SSLVs for commercial missions.”

ISRO indicated that the six-and-a-half-hour countdown for the launch began at 02:47 AM local time. This flight marks the third and final developmental mission for the SSLV-D3/EOS-08. The satellite is designed for a mission duration of one year.

The EOS-08 mission aims to design and develop a microsatellite, create payload instruments compatible with the microsatellite bus, and integrate new technologies for future operational satellites, according to an earlier ISRO release.

The EOS-08 represents a significant step forward in satellite systems with its Integrated Avionics system, known as the Communication, Baseband, Storage, and Positioning (CBSP) Package. This system combines multiple functions into a single, efficient unit, featuring cold redundant systems using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components and evaluation boards, and supporting up to 400 GB of data storage.
