Look: When UAE was hit by storm 41 years ago during summer

Storms are not unusual in the UAE during the summer months. On August 10, 1983, the entire UAE experienced a cyclonic storm that resulted in flooding, uprooted trees, and a severe sandstorm that reduced visibility to just a few meters, leading to numerous road accidents.

It was a Wednesday when the hurricane-like storm hit shortly after midday. The cyclone moved inland towards the Empty Quarter by late evening and weakened overnight.

On that summer day, Dubai, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi faced unusually strong west and south-west winds, while Fujairah, Khor Fakkan, and Kalba experienced intermittent light to moderate rains.

Motorists were heavily affected by the sudden storm, with many caught off guard during the lunchtime rush. Dubai Police reported several minor accidents, but fortunately, there were no serious casualties.

Air traffic at Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports continued normally, though Sharjah International Airport had to divert two incoming flights in the afternoon due to poor visibility.

The following day, August 11, brought moderate to heavy rains to the eastern coast of the UAE. Flooding was reported in Fujairah, Kalba, Khor Fakkan, and Dibba, while Ras Al Khaimah and surrounding areas experienced intermittent rains for about 30 minutes.

Temperatures dropped significantly, and residents reported waves up to three meters high between Kalba and Dibba Al Hesn on the east coast, noting that such high waves had not been seen since the 1970s.
