Magnitude 5.1 earthquake strikes Syria

A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck Syria on Friday, August 16, as reported by the UAE’s National Seismic Network of the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM).

The tremor was recorded at 2:15 pm UAE time, according to the National Seismic Network.

Authorities also noted that eight minor earthquakes were detected across various regions in Syria over the past day. The National Centre for Earthquakes in Syria clarified that these tremors were considered ‘weak,’ with magnitudes ranging from 1.4 to 3 on the Richter scale.

Earlier in the week, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake hit central Syria late Monday, with tremors felt in neighboring Lebanon, according to official media sources in both countries.

“An earthquake of 5.5 on the Richter scale struck east of Hama city at 11:56 pm,” reported Syria’s state-run SANA news agency, quoting Raed Ahmed, head of the National Earthquake Centre.

The United States Geological Survey recorded the magnitude of this quake as 5.0. Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency confirmed that “some residents of Beirut” and other areas “felt a light earthquake at 11:56 pm.”

This comes after a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake on February 6, 2023, killed nearly 60,000 people in Turkey and Syria.
