Netanyahu offers $5 million and safe passage out of Gaza to anyone returning a hostage

Netanyahu Offers Reward for Hostage Return Amid Criticism

In a bold move, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a $5 million reward and safe passage for anyone in Gaza who returns a hostage.

“To those who want to leave this entanglement, I say: Whoever brings us a hostage will find a safe way out for himself and his family. We will also give $5 million for every hostage,” Netanyahu stated while addressing the public at the Netzarim Corridor in central Gaza, alongside Defense Minister Israel Katz. He warned that anyone harming a hostage would “pay the price” and vowed to bring all hostages back.

The announcement has sparked significant backlash, with critics accusing Netanyahu of using hostages as political leverage. Opponents argue the plan is designed to prolong the ongoing conflict and bolster Netanyahu’s grip on power—allegations he firmly denies.

Einav Zangauker, mother of hostage Matan Zangauker, expressed outrage at the offer. “The prime minister is trading the hostages’ lives,” she said, accusing Netanyahu of endangering captives by offering financial incentives to their captors.

Referring to a controversial 2018 initiative where Qatar funneled millions of dollars into Gaza with Israel’s approval, she remarked, “It’s unbelievable that the man who funded Hamas is again offering money to Hamas.” The prime minister had previously defended that initiative as a means to stabilize southern Israel and avert a humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The debate surrounding Netanyahu’s motives has intensified as families of hostages express frustration. Critics suggest his strategy prioritizes political survival over the safe return of captives.

The hostage crisis began on October 7 of last year when Hamas attacked Israel, killing over 1,200 people and abducting more than 250. Among those taken, 97 are still in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 34 confirmed deceased. Rescue operations have seen many hostages recovered dead, amplifying public anger and skepticism toward the government’s approach.

Netanyahu’s latest initiative underscores the complex dynamics of a conflict where every decision carries profound humanitarian and political implications.
