As the back-to-school season approaches, UAE institutions are preparing by sending out welcome kits, creating new parent orientation websites, and coordinating staggered start times with neighboring schools to ease traffic on the first day.
Schools will resume on Monday, August 26, following a nearly two-month summer break that started on Monday, July 8, for most students.
Welcome Packs for Parents
Simon Herbert, Head of School/CEO at GEMS International School – Al Khail, explained, “We’ve developed a comprehensive new parent orientation website as part of the ‘welcome pack’ sent to all parents before the school year begins. Additionally, students will receive an ICT pack a week before school starts, containing their logins for apps and homeroom details.”
Staggered Start Times to Ease Traffic
“To ensure a smooth transition, we’ve implemented staggered start times with neighboring schools and established designated drop-off and pick-up zones. This information, along with a detailed traffic management plan, is included in the welcome kits and will be shared with parents. We urge parents to review these details to help reduce congestion and ensure everyone’s safety,” he added.
Reestablishing Routines
Head teachers recommend that parents start reestablishing their children’s routines before school begins. “During the holidays, children often develop different sleep patterns and daily habits, which can make returning to a structured school day challenging. We advise parents to begin setting regular bedtimes and wake-up times at least two weeks before school starts,” Herbert said.
Preparing for School
Other principals emphasize the importance of preparing students as the end of summer approaches. Fatima Martin, Principal of GEMS New Millennium School – Al Khail, noted, “Our welcome back communications encourage parents and students to adjust bedtimes, practice morning routines, establish homework habits, and discuss the upcoming school year.”
Special Day for New Students
Schools are also organizing special days for new students to explore the campus and meet other newcomers.
Holiday Homework
In Indian curriculum schools, principals stress the importance of submitting holiday homework on time. Abhilasha Singh, Principal of Shining Star International, said, “We advise parents to maintain a study routine during the summer to prevent students from feeling overwhelmed after a long break. Holiday homework must be submitted within the first two days of school reopening, as it is crucial for preparing students for the new lessons. This instruction is a standard part of our school routine.”
