If you drive in Dubai, here’s something important to know.
Two new Salik toll gates will be added to major roads in Dubai, starting as early as November this year.
Announced by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on Friday, January 19, these new tolls will apply on specific points along Al Khail Road and Sheikh Zayed Road.
The first new toll gate will be on the Business Bay Crossing along Al Khail Road. The second will be the Al Safa South Toll Gate on Sheikh Zayed Road, located between Al Meydan and Umm Al Sheif Streets.
The good news is that if you pass through both the north and south Safa Gates within an hour, you’ll only be charged once. This also applies to the existing toll gates in Al Mamzar.
Each time you drive through a Salik toll gate, a fee of Dhs4 will be charged.
The purpose of these new toll gates is to ease congestion, providing those who choose to drive with quicker, smoother, and less congested routes.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, explained that the new toll gates are intended to better distribute traffic across the entire road network. He added that these traffic toll policies also encourage the public to use mass transportation options like the metro, buses, marine transport, and other forms of soft mobility.
The new Salik gates are expected to significantly reduce travel times, particularly on Sheikh Zayed Road. For example, the Business Bay Crossing Gate is anticipated to reduce traffic on Al Khail Road by 15 percent and on Al Rebat Street by 16 percent.
The Al Safa South Gate is expected to decrease right-turn traffic from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Meydan Street by 15 percent and reduce traffic from Al Meydan and Al Safa Streets to Sheikh Zayed Road by 42 percent.
Additionally, it is expected to decrease traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road between Financial Centre Street and Latifa Bint Hamdan Street by 4 percent and optimize the use of First Al Khail and Al Asayel Roads by up to 4 percent, according to Al Tayer.
Salik, Dubai’s road toll collection system, has been in place since 2007. Currently, there are eight operational toll gates across the city, with motorists charged Dhs4 each time they pass through a gate.
