UAE extradites real estate entrepreneur Danilo Coppola to Italy

Danilo Coppola has been extradited to Italy following an official request, as confirmed in a joint statement by the UAE and Italy.

The Italian national, convicted of multiple financial crimes in Italy, was arrested in Abu Dhabi under an international arrest warrant.

The extradition was agreed upon by UAE Minister of Justice Abdullah Al Nuaimi and his Italian counterpart Carlo Nordio, in line with the bilateral extradition treaty between the two countries.

Local media reported that Coppola’s legal troubles include a May 2016 arrest in Rome on suspicion of fraudulent bankruptcy. Just a month prior, he had received a nine-year sentence for a series of bankruptcies amounting to €300 million ($334.3 million, Dh1.2 billion).

In 2020, a Milan appeals court sentenced him to seven years in prison for fraudulent bankruptcy, a decision upheld by Italy’s Supreme Court of Cassation in 2022.

Coppola also faces charges of attempted extortion and additional bankruptcy-related allegations in Milan.

The successful extradition underscores the strong ties between the UAE and Italy and their mutual commitment to justice, as highlighted by the justice ministers in their joint statement.

“These agreements demonstrate our commitment to enhancing co-operation on legal and judicial matters in accordance with international best practices, reinforcing our efforts to combat serious and organized crime,” they stated.

“This positive development in our judicial cooperation highlights our shared determination to ensure that there is no impunity for those who commit crimes and seek to escape justice by fleeing abroad.”
