UAE: Flu cases on the rise as weather changes; residents urged to get vaccinated

With fluctuating weather, cooling temperatures, and the return of many residents from summer vacations, doctors across the UAE, particularly in Dubai, have reported a rise in flu cases. Hospitals are seeing an increase in patients suffering from symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and respiratory issues.

Karim Sheikh, a 34-year-old outdoor sales manager in Dubai, experienced flu-like symptoms soon after returning from India. “It hit me suddenly after I came back from vacation,” said Sheikh. “I thought it was just travel fatigue, but within a day, I had a high fever and body aches. I’ve been off work for four days now, unable to function properly.”

Similarly, Maria Lopez, a 28-year-old marketing executive working in a Dubai-based supermarket chain, fell ill shortly after returning to work. “I had a few days off as my cousins were visiting Dubai, but when I got back to work, I fell sick two days later,” Lopez explained. “The cough and muscle pain were so severe that I couldn’t get out of bed. I’ve been on sick leave for two days, and my doctor advised complete rest before returning to work.”

### Flu Cases on the Rise in Dubai

Dr. Nishi Singh, a consultant virologist at Medcon FZC, explained that this time of year is particularly prone to the spread of flu viruses. “As the weather cools and humidity rises, along with the influx of people returning from international travel, the conditions become ideal for respiratory viruses to flourish,” said Dr. Singh.

### Importance of Flu Vaccination in Dubai

Flu vaccinations are essential in preventing the spread and complications of the virus. Dr. Jaya Geetha, an internal medicine specialist at Zulekha Hospital in Dubai, stressed the importance of flu shots, especially for high-risk groups like the elderly, children, and those with weakened immune systems. “Even if you haven’t taken the vaccine before the flu season begins, it’s still effective if administered during the season,” she said.

Each year, flu vaccines are updated to protect against the most prevalent strains of influenza A and B. Vaccination not only reduces the severity of symptoms if someone becomes infected but also lowers the chances of transmitting the virus to others.

In addition to vaccinations, doctors recommend other preventive measures like frequent hand washing, avoiding contact with sick individuals, and practicing good hygiene. “The flu primarily spreads through droplets when people cough or sneeze, and it can also be transmitted via contaminated hands,” said Dr. Singh. “Maintaining proper hand hygiene is crucial.”

### When to Seek Medical Attention in the UAE

For those affected by the flu, rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications are generally sufficient for managing symptoms. “In uncomplicated flu cases, simple home remedies and medications are enough,” said Dr. Singh. “However, higher-risk individuals should consider antivirals like Oseltamivir early in the illness to reduce symptoms and virus spread.”

Healthcare professionals advise that while most flu cases can be treated at home, it’s essential to recognize when to seek medical attention. “If a person experiences worsening symptoms like persistent high fever, chest pain, shortness of breath, or severe fatigue, especially in high-risk groups, they should consult a doctor immediately,” said Dr. Geetha.

### Flu Prevention for Families and Communities in Dubai

Families caring for someone with the flu should take additional steps to prevent the virus from spreading within the home. “Isolating the sick individual in a separate room, ensuring proper ventilation, and disinfecting shared areas can significantly reduce the risk of transmission,” added Dr. Geetha.

### Link to Vacation Returns and Flu Spike in Dubai

With many residents returning to Dubai from vacations abroad, the UAE is experiencing a surge in flu cases. “As people come back from different parts of the world, new flu strains are being introduced, and frequent social gatherings are accelerating transmission,” said Dr. Geetha.

For those who haven’t contracted the flu, doctors are urging preventive measures and vigilance. “Now is the ideal time to get vaccinated if you haven’t already,” said Dr. Singh. “The flu virus spreads quickly, but with the right precautions, treatment, and prevention strategies, it can be managed effectively in Dubai.”
