UAE labour law update: Don’t look for a job while on a visit visa

The UAE has recently implemented significant updates to its employment laws to better clarify the rights and responsibilities of both employers and employees.

A key change is that companies are prohibited from hiring individuals who are in the UAE on a visit visa. If you are in the UAE on a visit visa and are offered a job, you should not start working, even if the employer promises to secure a residency permit later. Instead, the employer must follow the proper procedures from the outset.

The UAE government clearly states on its website that working under a visit or tourist visa is illegal. Expats can only begin working in the UAE once the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) issues an official offer letter.

The decree also imposes fines ranging from Dhs100,000 to Dhs1 million on employers who hire workers without a valid permit.

Other updates include prohibitions against hiring workers or bringing them to the UAE without providing a job, misusing work permits, or shutting down a business without fulfilling workers’ rights.
