UAE minimum driving licence age lowered: 17-year-olds line up to get permits

Dubai Teens Excited as UAE Lowers Driving Age to 17

A new era of independence is about to begin for teenagers in Dubai, as the minimum driving age for cars and light vehicles has officially been lowered from 18 to 17. Starting March 29, 17-year-olds can register for their driving licenses, following a new federal decree law announced in October last year.

Teens Ready to Hit Dubai Roads

For twins Rhea and Rohan Nihalani, who turned 17 in November, this is more than just a milestone—it’s a friendly sibling race to see who gets their license first.

🚗 Rhea’s Plan: “I can’t wait to drive myself to the beach and go surfing. It’ll be great to have the freedom to go places without bothering my parents.”

🚗 Rohan’s Dream: “I use the Dubai Metro a lot, but it doesn’t take me everywhere. Driving will finally allow me to visit more places with my friends and even go through a fast food drive-through for the first time!”

For Amaan Mohiddina, who turns 17 in April, getting a license means more than just fun—it’s about responsibility.

🔹 “I want to drive my younger sister to school and help my parents with pickups and drop-offs.”
🔹 “It’ll be amazing to go on road trips with friends without depending on taxis or public transport.”

While many teens are eager to start, they also recognize the importance of safe driving. “I know driving in Dubai requires discipline and awareness,” said Amaan. “I’m making sure to take my lessons seriously and be a safe driver from Day 1.”

Driving Schools in Dubai Await RTA Directives

With the new rule taking effect soon, Dubai’s driving schools have seen a surge in inquiries from teenagers and parents.

📢 Fatima Raees, director of customer experience at Emirates Driving Institute, said:
✔️ “We’ve received many inquiries about 17-year-olds being eligible for a license.”
✔️ “We are waiting for further instructions from the RTA regarding any changes in the process.”
✔️ “As of now, applicants must still complete driving lessons and pay standard fees.”

Previously, 17.5-year-olds could start lessons and even pass the driving test, but the license was only issued at 18. The new rule eliminates this waiting period, allowing 17-year-olds to legally drive once they pass their test.

What’s Next for Young Drivers in Dubai?

With March 29 fast approaching, teenagers across Dubai are gearing up to hit the road, bringing a new level of freedom and responsibility. While excitement is high, safety remains the top priority, as RTA-approved instructors will guide young drivers to ensure they develop good driving habits from day one.
