UAE to Gradually Lift Drone Ban Starting November 25
The UAE Ministry of Interior has announced a phased plan to partially lift the ban on drone operations, beginning November 25. This conditional easing aims to ensure the continued safety of the UAE’s airspace while supporting the growth of the drone sector.
The announcement was made during a press conference at the Abu Dhabi Police College, held in collaboration with the National Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management Authority and the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).
New Unified Platform for Drone Operations
As part of the initiative, the UAE will launch a unified platform for drone operations. This system is designed to streamline registration and operational procedures for government entities and companies, ensuring compliance while bolstering the UAE’s drone industry.
- Phase 1: Initially, the platform will cater exclusively to companies and government agencies.
- Future Phases: Services will eventually expand to include individual drone enthusiasts, with details to be announced at a later stage.
Individual Drone Use in Future Phases
The phased approach includes a detailed evaluation after the initial launch. Colonel Jamal Al Hosani, Director of the Air Support Department at the General Department of Security Support, stated that once the first phase is assessed, the ban could be further eased to permit amateur drone operations.
This cautious strategy ensures that the reintroduction of drone activity aligns with national safety and operational standards.
Reasons Behind the Ban and Its Gradual Easing
The UAE’s Ministry of Interior implemented a ban on drones and light sports aircraft in 2022 following instances of misuse.
