UAE: Traveller caught with 8.7kg drugs at Sharjah airport

**Sharjah Authorities Thwart Major Drug Smuggling Attempt at Sharjah International Airport**

Sharjah Ports, Customs, and Free Zones Authority recently announced a successful operation where they intercepted an attempt to smuggle 8.716kg of narcotics through Sharjah International Airport. 

Customs officers at the Sharjah Airport Customs Centre grew suspicious of several cardboard packages carried by a passenger. Upon further inspection, they uncovered 10,934 narcotic tablets, cleverly concealed within lighting equipment, weighing a total of 8.716kg.

The authority praised the customs officers for their alertness, strong security measures, and their commitment to preventing the trafficking of prohibited substances through Sharjah’s borders.

The UAE maintains a strict zero-tolerance stance on drugs, vigorously enforcing its **Law on Combating Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances**. This law criminalizes all activities related to the handling of narcotic substances, including production, import, export, transportation, and possession, except under strict legal supervision for medical or scientific purposes.

Travellers to the UAE should be mindful of local medication regulations. It is vital to carry proper prescriptions and verify whether certain medications are controlled substances to avoid severe legal consequences.
