The UAE’s annual national influenza campaign will officially begin on Monday, September 9, as announced by the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP).
This seasonal initiative aims to encourage residents to get vaccinated against the flu and will also provide healthcare professionals with the latest international prevention strategies. The campaign is designed to increase vaccine coverage among key target groups, particularly those at higher risk of severe flu complications.
The vaccination drive will target all segments of the population, including UAE citizens, residents, government and private sector employees, and healthcare workers. Special attention will be given to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic health conditions.
With the UAE’s flu season typically beginning in October, this early vaccination campaign is intended to ensure a safer winter. Although the flu vaccine may not provide complete protection, it significantly reduces the severity of the illness for those who contract it.
The campaign will be launched in partnership with several key health authorities, including the Emirates Health Services (EHS), Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC), Department of Health Abu Dhabi (DoH), Dubai Health Authority (DHA), and Dubai Health.
MoHAP’s flu campaign is part of a broader national strategy to immunize the community and protect public health. The initiative focuses on implementing preventive measures to curb the spread of the virus, while also educating the public on the causes, symptoms, and methods of flu prevention.
Earlier this year, in July, doctors reported unusual flu activity persisting through the summer, which they attributed to changing weather patterns, international travel, and the influx of tourists to Dubai and other parts of the UAE. Medical experts have also emphasized the importance of students receiving flu vaccinations before returning to school after the summer break.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), seasonal influenza is an acute respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. While most people recover without treatment, the flu spreads easily through coughing or sneezing, and vaccination remains the most effective method for preventing the disease and limiting its transmission.
