Bangladesh PM Hasina resigns from post, flies off to India in military helicopter: Reports

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her position on Monday, according to various sources including the military, the high commission in Delhi, and media outlets. She departed in a military helicopter bound for India.

In Dhaka, thousands of Bangladeshi protesters stormed Hasina’s palace, prompting a source to tell AFP that she had fled amid widespread demonstrations calling for her resignation.

Channel 24 in Bangladesh broadcast footage of the crowds entering the premier’s official residence, celebrating and waving at the cameras.

TV footage from Bangladeshi channels showed protesters ransacking Hasina’s palace, overturning furniture, smashing glass doors, and even taking books and a live chicken.

Bangladeshi journalist Yeasir Arafat reported to AFP, “I am inside the Ganabhaban Palace. There are over 1,500 people here, and they are destroying furniture and glass.”

A close source to Hasina informed AFP that the 76-year-old leader had left Dhaka with her sister for a “safer place” and had intended to deliver a speech but was unable to do so.
