Sharjah: Rare 22º halo forms around Sun on April 26; why it happened

Sharjah Sky Phenomenon: Stunning 22º Halo Captivates UAE Residents

If you were in Sharjah this Saturday afternoon, you might have noticed something truly spectacular above — a breathtaking 22º halo encircling the sun!

This rare optical phenomenon, often witnessed across the UAE including Dubai, was caused by the refraction of sunlight through millions of tiny ice crystals suspended in high-altitude cirrus clouds, explained Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Emirates Astronomical Society.

What Creates a 22º Halo?
High in the atmosphere, hexagonal ice crystals form delicate clouds. When sunlight passes through these crystals, it bends and refracts, forming a perfect circular ring of light around the sun. The “22 degrees” refers to the halo’s radius as seen from Earth — not the angle at which the sunlight bends.

A Sign of Weather Changes in Dubai and Sharjah?
Experts note that spotting a 22º halo could signal a shift in weather conditions. In Dubai, Sharjah, and across the UAE, such phenomena often precede the arrival of low-pressure systems, hinting at possible changes in the forecast.

Attracting awe and curiosity from Dubai residents and photographers alike, Saturday’s 22º halo offered a perfect moment to appreciate the natural wonders of the UAE skies.
