UAE Declares June 27 a Public Holiday for Islamic New Year: Dubai Residents from India and Pakistan to Enjoy Long Weekend
The UAE government has officially announced that Friday, June 27, 2025, will be a public holiday across the country in observance of the Islamic New Year, marking the beginning of Hijri year 1447 AH. The announcement was made by the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) and applies to all employees in the public sector.
This decision means that government employees in Dubai and other emirates will enjoy a 3-day long weekend, as regular working hours are scheduled to resume on Monday, June 30.
Long Weekend Opportunity for Indian and Pakistani Expats in Dubai
The public holiday brings welcome news to the large communities of Indian and Pakistani expatriates living and working in Dubai and the wider UAE. Many residents from India and Pakistan take advantage of such extended weekends to travel, shop, or spend time with family and friends. Some also use this break to visit their home countries or explore nearby GCC destinations like Oman or Bahrain.
The announcement aligns with the official UAE holiday calendar for 2025, approved earlier by the UAE Cabinet. It follows closely after the Eid Al Adha holidays, giving Dubai residents another chance to relax or plan short domestic or international getaways.
Significance of the Hijri New Year
The Hijri calendar, based on lunar cycles, marks the beginning of a new year on the first day of Muharram, its first month. The Islamic New Year is an important date for Muslims in Dubai, India, Pakistan, and around the world, commemorating the Prophet Muhammad’s migration (Hijrah) from Makkah to Madinah.
While the day is generally marked with quiet reflection and family gatherings, many residents also use the holiday to visit mosques or engage in charitable activities.
Travel and Tourism in Dubai Expected to Surge
With this extended weekend, Dubai’s hospitality and tourism sector is likely to see increased activity. Hotels, malls, and popular tourist attractions are expected to offer special promotions and discounts, drawing residents and visitors from India, Pakistan, and other parts of the UAE.
As Dubai continues to attract millions of tourists annually, such holidays help boost local businesses while offering residents much-needed leisure time.
